How to Repair a Corrupted PDF File
A PDF may stop opening after an interrupted download, incomplete save, damaged transfer or structural error. Repair can rebuild surviving document structure, but it cannot recreate bytes that are truly missing.

Try the simplest recovery first
If the PDF came from email, cloud storage or a website, download it again before attempting repair. A failed transfer can create a damaged local copy while the original remains intact.
If you created the PDF, reopen the source document and export a fresh copy. This is usually safer than rebuilding a damaged export.
What PDF repair can do
A PDF contains objects plus structural information that tells a reader where those objects are located. When the closing structure is incomplete, a repair tool may be able to scan surviving objects and build a new readable file around them.
Recovery can be partial. One damaged page should not prevent the tool from returning other pages that remain readable.
- Use a copy of the damaged file.
- Record which pages are expected.
- Review images, fonts and page order.
- Keep any repaired result separate from the original.
What repair cannot do
No software can reconstruct content that was never saved or has been overwritten. A zero-byte file, a truncated page image or missing embedded font may require another copy from the sender or source application.
Repair is also not a way to bypass encryption. A password-protected PDF must be opened through an authorized workflow before its content can be processed.
Important: A file that opens after repair is not automatically complete. Visual review is still required.
Validate the recovered PDF
Count the pages, inspect the first and last page, and compare important sections against another copy when possible. Search for known words if the document should contain selectable text.
For records that must be complete, ask the sender or system owner for a replacement even when a repaired copy appears usable.
