Understand the estimate
How the German tax calculation works
Germany applies a progressive annual income-tax tariff to taxable income—not directly to gross salary. For 2026, the basic allowance is built into the formula. The calculator subtracts only the deductions and eligible pension or insurance contributions you enter, then applies the official tariff zones.
For a qualifying joint spouse assessment, the calculator uses the splitting method. It calculates tax on half of joint taxable income and doubles the result. The filing balance then compares estimated income tax, solidarity surcharge and selected church tax with the amounts already withheld.
Example: employee
Enter €55,000 salary, the deductible contribution amounts from your records, and Lohnsteuer from the annual wage-tax certificate.
Example: church tax
Choose 8% in Bavaria or Baden-Württemberg, 9% in most other states, or none when church tax does not apply.
Example: joint assessment
Combine both spouses' income and deductions, then choose joint assessment only when the statutory eligibility rules are met.
What this quick estimate does not include
It does not prepare a German tax return or reproduce payroll withholding. Child allowances and Kindergeld comparison, investment-income rules, foreign income, progression clauses, trade tax, special church-tax caps and detailed social-insurance calculations require additional information.

Frequently asked questions
Is this the same as the official BMF wage-tax calculator?+
No. The BMF tool calculates wage-tax withholding. This ToolsFA calculator is a simplified annual filing estimate that compares tax already withheld with estimated annual liability.
What is taxable income in Germany?+
Zu versteuerndes Einkommen is not the same as gross salary. It is determined after eligible expenses, allowances, pension and insurance deductions, and other adjustments.
Does the calculator support married couples?+
Yes. Joint spouse assessment applies the statutory splitting method: tax is calculated on half of joint taxable income and then doubled.
Is church tax always 9%?+
No. It is generally 8% of income tax in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg and 9% in other states. It does not apply to everyone.
Why can the final tax-office result differ?+
Children, investment income, foreign income, benefits, special expenses, extraordinary burdens and many other return details can change the assessment.
