Step by step
How to use the ToolsFA tool
- 1Open the PDF editor and choose an unlocked PDF from your device. Keep the source file unchanged as your reference copy.
- 2Choose Add text, Draw, Sign, Image, a shape or Edit existing text. For detected text, click the highlighted region and type into the replacement box.
- 3Switch to Select, then move or resize each new object. Use undo and redo while checking the correct page number.
- 4Download the edited PDF as a new copy. Reopen it outside the editor and compare every changed page with the original.
- 5Search for any visually replaced wording. If the old wording remains searchable, remember that the edit is a cover—not redaction—and do not share it as a sanitized file.
Worked example
Worked example: correct a visible project name
Assume a five-page internal draft contains selectable text and the project name on page 2 is outdated. Keep the original PDF. Open the editor, go to page 2, choose Edit existing text and click the highlighted name. The tool places a white cover over that detected region and adds an editable replacement box containing the old wording.
Type the new project name, match the size as closely as the available standard fonts allow, then move and resize the box so it stays inside the original line. Download the edited copy and inspect page 2 at 100% zoom and in print preview. Search for the old project name as a final check: it may still exist in the underlying text layer, so this method is suitable for a visual correction but not for removing confidential content.
Understand the overlay workflow
ToolsFA keeps the original page and draws new objects into a downloaded copy. Added text, images, ink, signatures, lines and shapes do not make surrounding paragraphs reflow. They sit at the position and size you choose.
Edit existing text follows the same model. It reads selectable text from the current page, creates a white cover for the detected area and adds replacement text over that cover. This is useful for visible corrections when exact reflow is unnecessary, but the old text layer is not rewritten.
Whiteout is not secure redaction
A white rectangle or visual replacement can hide words on the page while the underlying text remains searchable, selectable or extractable. The ToolsFA whiteout control is therefore a presentation tool, not a redaction tool.
Use a dedicated redaction workflow that removes the underlying content when deleting personal, financial, medical or confidential information. Then search for the removed phrase, try selecting the former area and inspect document properties, comments, attachments and layers as required by the recipient.
Important: Never share a sensitive document based only on how the covered page looks on screen.
Protect privacy while editing
For confidential files, understand whether the service uploads the document or processes it on the device. Browser-based processing can keep the selected file on the computer, although the browser still needs enough memory to handle large pages.
Avoid editing sensitive documents on shared computers. Close the file when finished and store the downloaded copy in an appropriate location.
- Keep an untouched original.
- Use descriptive filenames for revisions.
- Check every changed page after export.
- Confirm links, forms or signatures still behave as required.
Review before sending
Open the exported PDF in a different viewer, not only the editor. Zoom in on added text and images, check page boundaries, and confirm that nothing shifted or became clipped.
If the PDF is intended for printing, print or preview one representative page. Margins and thin marks can behave differently on paper.

Frequently asked questions
Does Edit existing text delete the original wording?
No. ToolsFA detects selectable text, covers the visible region and adds a new editable text box. The original text may remain searchable or recoverable underneath, so this is not secure redaction.
Can the editor recognize text in a scanned PDF?
Not by itself. The detected-text feature reads an existing PDF text layer. If the page is only an image, use the English OCR workflow first and verify its recognized text.
Does my selected PDF leave my device?
The current editor opens, edits and exports the PDF in your browser. ToolsFA does not receive the selected document, although the editor still needs network access to load its browser libraries.
Will the replacement use the exact embedded font?
Not necessarily. The editor exports replacement text using its available standard font choices. Compare size, spacing and line breaks against the original before sharing.
