W-2 refund guide
How to Estimate Your 2026 Tax Refund from a W-2
A tax refund is generally the difference between payments already credited to your return and the tax ultimately calculated. Your W-2 supplies important inputs, but it does not show the final refund by itself.

Key takeaway: Use W-2 Box 1 for wages, Box 2 for federal withholding and Box 17 for state withholding; do not treat Social Security and Medicare withholding as income-tax payments.
The refund formula in plain English
Start with taxable income, apply the deduction and tax brackets for the filing status, then account for eligible credits. Compare that estimated liability with federal withholding and estimated payments.
State refunds are calculated separately under state rules. The ToolsFA calculator keeps federal and state withholding separate so a large payment in one system does not hide a balance due in the other.
- ✓ W-2 Box 1: taxable wages
- ✓ W-2 Box 2: federal income tax withheld
- ✓ W-2 Box 17: state income tax withheld
- ✓ Boxes 4 and 6: Social Security and Medicare, not federal income-tax withholding
Example: If estimated federal income tax is $6,900 and federal withholding is $7,800, the preliminary federal refund is $900 before other credits or adjustments.

Why withholding is not your final tax
Payroll withholding is a prepayment based partly on Form W-4. Marriage, dependants, multiple jobs, bonuses, investment income and deductions can make the final result different.
A refund is not automatically a sign that the return is more valuable. It can mean more tax was withheld from paychecks than necessary during the year.
Check the estimate before relying on it
Reconcile every W-2 and add other taxable income. If the result suggests a recurring large refund or balance due, use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator and consider whether a new Form W-4 is appropriate.
Keep state and local rules in view. City or county income taxes, part-year residence and multi-state work are outside a quick one-state estimate.

Frequently asked questions
Is W-2 Box 1 gross salary?
Not always. It is federal taxable wages and can differ from gross pay because of pre-tax benefits.
Should I add Social Security withholding to Box 2?
No. Social Security and Medicare payroll taxes are separate from federal income-tax withholding.
Does the calculator file a return?
No. It provides an educational estimate and does not prepare or transmit a tax return.
