German refund basics
How to Estimate a German Tax Refund from Your Lohnsteuerbescheinigung
A German tax refund estimate begins by separating annual income and deductions from the taxes your employer has already withheld. Your Lohnsteuerbescheinigung supplies the withholding figures; your tax return determines the final annual liability.

Which figures belong in the calculator
The annual wage-tax certificate normally shows gross employment pay and separate amounts withheld for wage tax, solidarity surcharge and church tax. Keeping those lines separate prevents the same payment from being counted twice.
Gross pay is not the same as zu versteuerndes Einkommen. Eligible expenses, pension and insurance contributions, allowances and other adjustments can reduce the figure to which the annual tariff applies.
- ✓ Bruttoarbeitslohn: gross taxable employment pay
- ✓ Einbehaltene Lohnsteuer: wage tax withheld
- ✓ Solidaritätszuschlag: surcharge withheld
- ✓ Kirchensteuer: church tax withheld, when applicable

The refund comparison
The calculator estimates annual income tax under the 2026 tariff, adds any estimated solidarity surcharge and selected church tax, then subtracts that total from the corresponding amounts already withheld.
A positive balance suggests a refund; a negative balance suggests an amount owing. It is a planning estimate, not a tax assessment or an ELSTER filing.
Example: If €10,200 was withheld across the three tax lines and estimated liability is €8,950, the indicative refund is €1,250.

Why the Finanzamt result may differ
A final assessment can include children, investment income, foreign income, benefits, extraordinary burdens, household services and adjustments that a quick calculator cannot infer.
Use complete annual documents and treat the estimate as a reasonableness check before submitting through ELSTER or consulting a qualified adviser.

Frequently asked questions
Is Lohnsteuer the final income tax?
Not necessarily. It is payroll withholding credited against the annual income-tax assessment.
Should I combine Soli and church tax with Lohnsteuer?
No. Enter each separately so the estimate can reconcile the correct liability.
Can this submit my return?
No. Use ELSTER or another authorized filing method to submit a return.
