German Joint Tax Assessment and Ehegattensplitting

Qualifying spouses can be assessed jointly under Germany’s splitting method. The calculation does not simply apply a special flat rate: it calculates tax on half of joint taxable income and doubles the result.

The statutory splitting calculation

Section 32a of the German Income Tax Act calculates joint income tax as twice the tax due on half of the couple’s combined taxable income. Because the tariff is progressive, the result can differ from adding two individual assessments.

The difference is often more noticeable when the spouses’ taxable incomes are unequal, but eligibility and the complete return still determine the final result.

Example: For €80,000 of combined taxable income, the tariff is applied to €40,000 and the resulting income tax is doubled.

How to enter a joint estimate

Add both spouses’ relevant income, deductions and taxes withheld. Do not enter the same household deduction twice or treat a payroll tax class as the final annual tax result.

Choose the calculator’s joint-assessment option only for a scenario that qualifies for Zusammenveranlagung.

  • Combine both incomes
  • Combine eligible deductions once
  • Combine Lohnsteuer withheld
  • Keep Soli and church tax in their separate fields

Payroll classes and annual assessment

German payroll tax classes influence withholding during the year; they do not replace the final annual assessment. A couple may therefore receive a refund or owe tax even when monthly payroll deductions appeared reasonable.

Use the annual documents for both spouses and confirm the final treatment through ELSTER or professional advice when circumstances are complex.

Frequently asked questions

Does joint assessment always reduce tax?

Not always. The effect depends on income distribution and the couple’s complete tax circumstances.

Do tax classes determine final annual tax?

No. They primarily affect payroll withholding; the annual assessment determines final liability.

Can I enter only one spouse’s withholding?

For a joint scenario, combine the relevant withholding for both spouses.
